The Islamic University of Technology (IUT) achieved a major milestone in its commitment to sustainability with the inauguration of its first on-grid 240.3 kWp Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Plant on 6 March 2026. The project, implemented by the Institute of Energy and Environment (IEE) under the CAPEX model, was formally inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam, in the presence of faculty members, officials, students, and invited guests. The ceremony commenced with a technical briefing at the Digital Learning Theatre (DLT), delivered by Prof. Dr. Md. Rezwanul Karim, Head of IEE, and Prof. Dr. Ashik Ahmed, Advisory Panel Member of IEE, followed by the unveiling of the inauguration plaque by the Vice-Chancellor.

Initiated as a feasibility study by the IEE in early 2021, the project has now been successfully commissioned to generate clean electricity from sunlight and supply it directly to the university's grid through a net metering system. The 240.3 kWp plant is expected to produce approximately 250 MWh of renewable electricity annually, reducing IUT's electricity expenditure by up to 20% while lowering carbon emissions and promoting a greener campus. During the technical briefing, the Head of IEE highlighted the ongoing establishment of a High Voltage Energy Testing Laboratory and outlined plans to expand rooftop solar installations across the campus. Feasibility studies indicate an additional 750 kWp can be installed on other campus buildings, increasing the university's total solar capacity to approximately 1 MW. The initiative is expected to strengthen renewable energy research, provide practical training opportunities for students and professionals, and further advance IUT's contribution to sustainable development and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
